Master of the Rolls
editA senior English judicial office whose title derives from the holder’s former role as Keeper of the Rolls, the records of the Court of Chancery. By the nineteenth century the Master was principally a Chancery judge and, following the Judicature Acts 1873–75, became a senior appellate judge. Today the Master of the Rolls heads the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal.
