Assizes

edit

By John Simpson •

Periodic courts held by judges of the High Court in counties of England and Wales, principally to try serious criminal offences, with juries, and to hear certain civil cases. In the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century, assizes were an important part of the superior court system, alongside Quarter Sessions and magistrates’ courts. The Courts Act 1971 abolished the assizes, transferring their criminal jurisdiction to the newly established Crown Court.
