Lord Lieutenant of Ireland
editThe Crown’s chief representative in Ireland, responsible for overseeing the administration and representing the monarch. The office, traditionally held by a senior British politician, became particularly important under the Act of Union 1800, when Ireland was governed as part of the United Kingdom. The Lord Lieutenant was assisted by the Chief Secretary for Ireland. The office was abolished when the Irish Free State was established in 1922.
