Examining Chaplain

edit

By John Simpson •

A clergyman appointed by a bishop to examine candidates for ordination and advise on their suitability for Holy Orders. The role became particularly important in the nineteenth century, before theological colleges and formal clerical training were widespread. Examining Chaplains continue to be appointed in the Church of England, although their work now forms part of a wider system of vocational discernment and theological training.
