Elementary Education Act

By John Simpson •

Usually referring to the Elementary Education Act 1870, which established a national framework for elementary education in England and Wales. It allowed elected School Boards to establish and maintain schools where existing provision was inadequate, and enabled local authorities to require attendance. Further Elementary Education Acts, particularly those of 1876 and 1880, extended the system and made elementary education effectively compulsory.
