Gothic Revival

edit

By John Simpson •

(Of or designating) a nineteenth-century movement in architecture and the decorative arts that revived forms and principles associated with medieval Gothic architecture. It developed in Britain from the later eighteenth century and became particularly influential during the nineteenth century, when Gothic forms were widely used for churches, public buildings, houses, and ecclesiastical decoration. Augustus Pugin and George Gilbert Scott were among its leading British exponents.
