National Liberal Club

edit

By John Simpson •

A London political and social club founded in 1882 to provide a more accessible centre for Liberals and their supporters than the established aristocratic clubs. The initiative came from Arthur J. Williams, with Gladstone and other prominent Liberals involved in its establishment. Gladstone laid the foundation stone of its permanent clubhouse at 1 Whitehall Place in 1884; the building opened in 1887. The Club remains closely associated with Liberalism.
