Chancellor’s Medal
editA university prize awarded under the authority of its chancellor. At Cambridge, two annual gold Chancellor’s Medals for classical learning were established in 1751 by the Duke of Newcastle, then Chancellor. Awarded by examination, they became prestigious University honours. They were distinct from the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for English Poetry, established in 1813 and sometimes called the Chancellor’s Prize.
