Addiscombe Military Seminary

A military academy established by the East India Company at Addiscombe near Croydon, in 1809 to train young officers for the Company’s armies in India, particularly in artillery and engineering. It provided a broad education in science and military subjects and was an important counterpart to Woolwich and Sandhurst. The institution was formally the East India Company Military Seminary until 1855, when it became the East India Company Military College; after the transfer of India to the Crown in 1858, it was renamed the Royal India Military College. It was commonly called Addiscombe Seminary, Addiscombe College, or Addiscombe Military Academy. It closed in 1861.
