The legal right to nominate a clergyman to a vacant ecclesiastical benefice, subject to the Bishop’s formal institution. The right was usually held by an individual, family, corporation, or ecclesiastical body, and could be inherited, transferred, or sold. Advowsons were an important form of property in England, particularly before twentieth-century reforms reduced their practical significance.
