Alpine Club

edit

By John Simpson •

A British mountaineering club founded in London in 1857, the world’s first such club. It played a leading role in the development of mountaineering, particularly in the Alps, and its members made many important early ascents. The Club has published the Alpine Journal since 1863, an important record of mountaineering and exploration. Its membership has included numerous members of the Athenaeum and other learned and professional circles. The Club remains active today.
