Anglo-Irish ascendancy

The predominantly Protestant landed and political elite that dominated Irish government, landownership, and society from the seventeenth century. Largely Anglican and associated with the established Church of Ireland, it supplied many landowners, politicians, lawyers, and officials. Its dominance was progressively weakened by the Act of Union 1800, Catholic Emancipation, and nineteenth-century land reform, and had largely disappeared by the early twentieth century.
