In Cambridge University use: a member of a small, secretive intellectual society at the University, founded in 1820. Membership was by invitation only and originally limited to twelve. During the nineteenth century it became influential through its discussions of philosophy, politics, religion, and literature, attracting many of Cambridge’s most brilliant students.
