Medical practitioners, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, who combined the diagnosis and treatment of illness with the preparation and dispensing of medicines. Apothecaries increasingly undertook the work of general practitioners, including visiting patients in their homes and, where appropriate, performing minor surgical procedures. Their training and status varied, but by the nineteenth century the distinction between apothecary, physician, and surgeon was becoming less clear.
