Archiepiscopal peculiar

edit

By John Simpson •

A parish, church, or other ecclesiastical jurisdiction exempt from the authority of the local bishop and subject directly to an archbishop. Such peculiars developed from medieval grants and privileges and could possess their own courts and officials. Most ecclesiastical peculiars in England were abolished in the nineteenth century, particularly under legislation of 1836 and 1846, which transferred their jurisdiction to the appropriate dioceses.
