Arthur’s Club
editA prestigious, non-political London gentlemen’s club founded in 1811, descended from the eighteenth-century Arthur’s Chocolate House. Its membership included aristocrats, country gentlemen, and other prominent figures. Its clubhouse at 69 St James’s Street, designed by Thomas Hopper, opened in 1827. Arthur’s closed in 1940, and its premises were subsequently occupied by the Carlton Club after its Pall Mall clubhouse was bombed.
