assize court

edit

By John Simpson •

A court held by a judge travelling on circuit to hear assizes in counties of England and Wales. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Assize Courts principally tried serious criminal offences before juries, and also heard certain civil cases. They formed part of the superior court system alongside Quarter Sessions and magistrates’ courts. The Courts Act 1971 abolished the assizes and transferred their jurisdiction principally to the newly established Crown Court.
