Assize

edit

By John Simpson •

A sitting of a court, particularly one held by a judge travelling on circuit. In England and Wales, assizes tried serious criminal cases and certain civil cases, generally before a jury. Prominent throughout the nineteenth century, they were abolished under the Courts Act 1971, with their criminal jurisdiction transferred principally to the Crown Court. The term is now chiefly historical.
