attorney

A person legally authorised to act on behalf of another and, in the United States, the usual term for a lawyer. In England the word formerly described a legal practitioner but was largely replaced by “solicitor” and “barrister” after legal reforms in 1873. It survives in expressions such as “power of attorney” and “Attorney General”.
