Ballot Act

edit

By John Simpson •

The Ballot Act 1872 introduced secret voting in British parliamentary and municipal elections, replacing voting openly by declaring one’s choice before officials and other voters. It aimed to reduce intimidation, bribery, and undue influence, particularly by employers and landlords. Following the Reform Act 1867, it was an important step towards modern electoral practice. Secret ballots became a permanent feature of British elections and remain fundamental to the conduct of elections today.
