A lawyer qualified to represent clients in the higher courts of England and Wales. During the nineteenth century barristers were trained through the Inns of Court, practised mainly from chambers, and played a prominent role in the legal system, Parliament, and public life. Their distinctive court dress of gown and wig remains a recognised feature of the profession today.
