Board Schools
editPublicly funded elementary schools in England and Wales established under the Elementary Education Act 1870 and managed by an elected School Board. Board schools provided non-denominational education where existing voluntary schools were insufficient. After School Boards were abolished in 1902, their schools became the responsibility of local education authorities and were commonly called council schools.
