Boer War

edit

By John Simpson •

Either of two wars between the British and Boer republics in southern Africa. The First Boer War (1880–1) resulted in British recognition of the independence of the Transvaal. The Second Boer War (1899–1902) followed disputes over British influence and the political status of Uitlanders in the Transvaal, and ended with British victory and annexation of the Boer republics. The second is usually intended by the unqualified term Boer War in British historical writing.
