Boer Wars

edit

By John Simpson •

Two wars between Britain and the Boer republics of southern Africa. The First (1880–81) ended with the Transvaal regaining self-government under British suzerainty. The Second (1899–1902), arising from tensions over British influence and Uitlander rights, ended with British victory and annexation of the republics. The singular ‘Boer War’ usually denotes the second conflict.
