Bombay

The former name of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra on India’s western coast. During the nineteenth century it was the centre of the East India Company’s Bombay Establishment and an important administrative, commercial, and military base of British India. The name remained in common use in British records until it was officially replaced by Mumbai in the late twentieth century.
