brevet

A term for an honorary military rank granted above an officer’s substantive rank, usually without additional pay. In the British Army it was widely used during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a reward for distinguished service, a means of recognising seniority, and a way of encouraging promotion. Brevet promotions were particularly associated with the Napoleonic Wars and continued until their abolition in 1967.
