British Institution

A private society founded in 1805 to promote the fine arts in Britain. Based in Pall Mall, London, it held exhibitions of Old Masters and contemporary artists, attracting aristocratic collectors and art connoisseurs rather than professional artists. During the nineteenth century it played an important role in shaping public taste, though its preference for traditional art was increasingly challenged by newer artistic movements. It closed in 1867.
