By John Simpson •

A historic mansion on Piccadilly, London, built in the seventeenth century and subsequently remodelled. Acquired by the government in 1854, it became the home of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1868. Its courtyard buildings accommodate several learned societies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Geological Society. The complex remains an important centre for art and scholarship.
