Calcutta

The former name of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal in eastern India. During the nineteenth century it was the headquarters of the East India Company’s Bengal Establishment and the principal administrative centre of British India until the transfer of the imperial capital to Delhi in 1911. The name Calcutta remained in widespread use until it was officially changed to Kolkata in 2001.
