Canterbury Association

An English colonising association founded in 1848 by John Robert Godley, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, and others to establish an Anglican settlement in New Zealand’s South Island. Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1849, it organised the settlement of Canterbury, bringing about 3,500 settlers there by 1853. Christchurch became the settlement’s principal town. The Association was wound up by 1855.
