Carlton Club

edit

By John Simpson •

A private London club founded in 1832 as a political club for supporters of Sir Robert Peel and the Conservative Party. It became the principal meeting place of Conservative politicians and was closely associated with the development of the modern Conservative Party. The Club moved to its present Pall Mall premises in 1835, designed by Robert Smirke and rebuilt by Richard Norman Shaw in 1856–59. Women have been admitted as members since 2000.
