Ceylon

The former name of Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean south of India. Under British rule during the nineteenth century, Ceylon was a Crown colony administered separately from British India. The island was known particularly for its production of coffee and later tea, which became major exports under British commercial development. The name Ceylon remained in official use until 1972.
