Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster

edit

By John Simpson •

A British ministerial office originally responsible for administering the Duchy of Lancaster, the monarch’s private estate as Duke of Lancaster. Dating from the Middle Ages, its judicial and administrative functions gradually diminished, and by the nineteenth century it was a relatively light office. It survives as a government appointment, commonly combined with other responsibilities determined by the Prime Minister.
