Chancery

edit

By John Simpson

A branch of English law concerned with equity, providing remedies where common law was inadequate or too rigid. The Court of Chancery dealt particularly with trusts, estates, inheritance, and property, becoming notorious for costly and prolonged proceedings. The Judicature Acts 1873–75 transferred its jurisdiction to the Chancery Division of the High Court, which continues to handle property, trusts, companies, and related civil matters.
