Charity Organisation Society
editA charitable organisation founded in London in 1869 to coordinate relief, prevent duplication, and investigate applicants’ circumstances. It sought to direct assistance towards those it considered deserving and encourage self-reliance rather than indiscriminate almsgiving. Its methods helped shape modern social work but attracted criticism for their treatment of poverty. Renamed the Family Welfare Association in 1946, it became Family Action in 2008.
