Chartism

edit

By John Simpson •

A British working-class political movement centred on the People’s Charter of 1838, demanding universal male suffrage, secret voting, annual Parliaments, equal electoral districts, payment of MPs, and abolition of the property qualification for MPs. Chartists pursued reform through petitions, meetings, and demonstrations, with some advocating more radical action. The movement declined after its great 1848 petition but influenced later democratic reform.
