chartists
editSupporters of Chartism, a British working-class political movement campaigning for the six demands of the People’s Charter (1838): universal male suffrage, secret ballots, annual parliamentary elections, equal electoral districts, payment of MPs, and abolition of MPs’ property qualifications. Chartists employed petitions, mass meetings, and sometimes direct action. Although their petitions failed, most demands were eventually achieved through parliamentary reform.
