Church of England Temperance Society
editA Church of England organisation originating in 1873, when Archbishop Archibald Tait convened a conference at Lambeth Palace to promote temperance. Canon Henry John Ellison, a leading advocate of abstinence, became its first secretary and subsequently a principal leader. The Society encouraged both moderation and total abstinence, reflecting differing attitudes within the Church, and became an important vehicle for Anglican involvement in the Victorian temperance movement.
