By John Simpson •

A London private members’ club founded in 1832 for bankers, merchants, shipowners, and other leading City professionals. Its purpose-built clubhouse at 19 Old Broad Street, designed by Philip Hardwick, opened in 1834. It became an important centre of City commercial and financial life. The Club remains at the same address and has admitted women since 2011.
