Clerk of the Crown

The Clerk of the Crown in Chancery, a Crown and parliamentary official responsible for constitutional and administrative functions. In the nineteenth century these included issuing parliamentary election writs, preparing patents creating peerages, and participating in Royal Assent. From 1885 the office was combined with that of Permanent Secretary to the Lord Chancellor. The Clerk remains responsible for election writs and other formal documents.
