Clerk of the Fees

A parliamentary official concerned with the administration and collection of fees arising from the business of the House of Commons. The office formed part of the House’s complex administrative machinery, particularly in relation to private bills, committees, elections, and the preparation of parliamentary papers. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, fees formed an important part of the remuneration of parliamentary officials, but reforms during the nineteenth century increasingly replaced fee-based income with fixed salaries.
