Clerk to the Signet

A Scottish legal official employed in the Signet Office, assisting in the preparation and issue of writs and other documents passing under the royal Signet. Clerks to the Signet should not be confused with Writers to the Signet (WS), who formed a distinct body of Scottish law agents associated with the Signet and the Court of Session.
