In the British Army, the formal authority by which an officer was appointed to military service, with a particular rank and entitlement to pay. Until the abolition of purchase in 1871, commissions in many regiments could be bought and sold at officially regulated prices.

In government or organisational use, a body appointed to undertake a particular function, such as an investigation, judicial inquiry, or administrative task.
