A term meaning a counsellor, adviser, or assistant judge who contributes to the formation of legal decisions rather than acting merely as an advocate. The title was historically used by the Royal College of Physicians from its foundation in the sixteenth century. In medical and learned institutions of the nineteenth century, such titles reflected traditional forms of professional organisation and authority.
