County franchise

edit

By John Simpson •

The right to vote in parliamentary elections for county constituencies, historically distinct from the borough franchise. In England and Wales, it was traditionally based on property qualifications, notably ownership of a freehold worth 40 shillings annually. Reform Acts in 1832 and 1884 extended eligibility, the latter bringing county and borough qualifications broadly into line. Property-based restrictions were subsequently removed.
