Court of Session

edit

By John Simpson •

Scotland’s supreme civil court, established in 1532. It hears major civil cases at first instance and appeals from lower courts and tribunals. The Court of Session has an Outer House, dealing mainly with cases at first instance, and an Inner House, which principally hears appeals. Its jurisdiction has developed over time and it remains Scotland’s principal civil court.
