Crimean War

A war of 1853–6 between Russia and an alliance including the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France, and Sardinia-Piedmont, arising from disputes over Russian influence in Ottoman territories. Fighting centred on Crimea, particularly the siege of Sevastopol, but occurred elsewhere. The war exposed serious weaknesses in British military organisation and medical care, prompting reforms associated particularly with Florence Nightingale.
