Darwinism

edit

By John Simpson •

The theory of evolution associated with Charles Darwin, particularly evolution by natural selection. Darwin presented the theory in On the Origin of Species, published in 1859, and developed it further in subsequent works. The term Darwinism became widely used in the later nineteenth century, sometimes referring specifically to natural selection and sometimes more broadly to evolutionary ideas associated with Darwin. Its meaning has therefore varied according to context.
