Dean of Arches

The judge who presides over the Court of Arches, the principal ecclesiastical appeal court of the Province of Canterbury. The office is held by a senior barrister or experienced judge and is appointed jointly by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. During the nineteenth century the Dean of Arches played an important role in resolving disputes within the established Church, especially over ritual and church law.
