deceased wife’s sister

By John Simpson •

English law prohibited a man from marrying his deceased wife’s sister, treating the relationship created by marriage (affinity) as a bar. The prohibition was strongly defended by parts of the Church of England and repeatedly debated in Parliament. The Deceased Wife’s Sister’s Marriage Act 1907 removed the bar and generally recognised such marriages, including those previously contracted. Similar restrictions existed in continental Europe but varied between countries.
